Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police report early analysis show the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are currently not aware of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A senior official stated the attack made him speechless and had to be addressed promptly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
